20 days in a van : Part 8 : Days 18-20 (14-16 August)

Our final campsite stop before returning to UK was at Neufchâtel en Bray - a small town of farming and associated light industry by the banks of the river Bethune in the Pays de Bray, some 25 miles (40 km) south east of Dieppe. It is famous for its heart-shaped cheese which has been made here since the 16th century.

This is an excellent campsite and is very popular as a stopover either to or from the ferry ports of Dieppe and Calais.

An added attraction to this venue is the proximity of Avenue Verte - a disused railway line which has been converted into an excellent cycle/walking/wheelchair route. It follows the former Dieppe to Paris railway and currently starts just outside Dieppe at Arques-la-Bataille and stops again just outside Forges-les-Eaux. Once complete, the route will extend to Paris almost entirely on traffic-free routes. It passes through Neufchâtel en Bray - within 50m of the campsite.

Needless to say, I simply had to cycle the entire length of this trail. One afternoon I went south to Forges les Eaux and on our final morning I cycled north to Arques la Bataille on the outskirts of Dieppe whilst Ann drove the van to meet me there.

At Neufchâtel railway station you enter a stretch of the path which represents the solar system and its principal bodies on a scale of 1 metre for 1.4 million kilometres.

On this scale, the Sun, Mercury, Mars, Earth and Venus are within the confines of railway station ...

... and the edge of solar system is about half way to Forges les Eaux.

Here are some of the stations and views along the way

Forges les Eaux

Finally before boarding our ferry we found time to visit Varenge sur Mer ...

This was a place that Claude Monet, the famous Impressionist artist, visited and created some of his famous paintings.

We took the Monet trail down to the beach. On the way down there are three representative views of famous Monet paintings.

This is a 21st century representation of the lost "cabane du douanier"

To view these paintings is completely free - you could say it was "Monet for nothing"!!

What a wonderful way to end our holiday. Bon voyage
