Walking in Wensleydale - Part 1 - Leyburn

Swaledale has the River Swale, Wharfedale, the Wharfe, Ribblesdale the Ribble but there is no River Wensley. The dale of Wensleydale is formed by the River Ure which is sometimes pronounced Yore. Wensley village gives its name to the whole of Wensleydale. Most Yorkshire Dales are named from their rivers, but for some reason Wensleydale is named from a village.

This was my base for a few days.

The campsite is just outside of Leyburn on the road to Middleham.

Over the next few days I planned to do some walking around this part of the dale and maybe also fit in a cycle ride

As you can see there were splendid views of the dale from the site - that's Middleham in the distance

I spent the first afternoon getting to know the area - this is a pub that Ann and I visited some 25 years ago; it's changed a bit since our last visit

Some of the views were splendid. More of this on Day 2
